Clearly Utley, who received four of our five votes for top 2B, heads the class if these projections hold true, however Roberts and Figgins both have solid value too. Their base stealing abilities are key. After those three, the picture gets cloudy with Rickie Weeks, Robinson Cano, Dan Uggla, Josh Barfield, and Ian Kinsler holding the next five spots in our composite rankings. This group is tough to judge, because outside of probably only Cano, it's tough to make a solid projection for anyone. Both Weeks and Kinsler missed significant time last year and both Uggla and Barfield enjoyed their first productive seasons, and all are young players still making a name for themselves in the league. My projections for these five are tempered, but it is acceptable to consider potential for better of draft day when considering drafting these players.

Looking at these projections it's easy to see why there were very scrambled rankings after the top three were listed. Although Cano and Uggla provide different stats than Weeks, Barfield, and Kinsler, all five seem to have similar perceived values. All five have the potential to produce solid numbers across the board and are reasonable selections to man a 2B spot in basically any format.
The next seven players in our composite ranks pose similar questions yet all have similar upside, which is what makes 2B so intriguing this season. Not too many years is the 15 th ranked 2B coming off a 26 HR season, but that is the case in our rankings this year as veteran Ray Durham came in at that position. Durham and Jeff Kent represent the old veterans of this bunch, as the other five players range from 3 rd year import Tadahito Iguchi to 2nd year youngster Howie Kendrick to Marcus Giles, who's trying to return to 2005 form as he moves on to San Diego. Don't let better known names like Kent and Durham make you snag one of these guys earlier than they deserve though. They belong in this tier. Again though, pretty much all of these seven present question marks, whether it be age, injury, or a lack of experience.

To me, Marcus Giles stands out of this group as the guy who, I feel, might be out of place. Giles has had injury woes; however the past two years he has played at least 140 games and we know his track record. At the age of 29, Giles should be in the midst of his better years and I think he can even beat the projections I have listed for him. The other guy who also stands out with potential for better is Kendrick. His composite ranking was dragged down by my personal ranking for him, but that isn't a knock on his potential. Kendrick can play, and has all around ability.
Looking down the latter 15 of our ranked players there are still numerous potential options including players like Jorge Cantu, Ty Wigginton, Luis Castillo, Orlando Hudson, Chris Burke, and Jose Lopez as the stand out options in my opinion. Jose Lopez is a player I have ranked well above the rest of the players. Lopez started off the season very hot last year and then trailed off a bit and his power production was lost for the season. He continued to hit even if it wasn't for power, which is good to see from a slumping player. Lopez has typically been a player who has hit a lot of doubles, and that should continue to develop into HR power much like we saw in the first two months of the season.
For the other options listed, they can cover you're specific needs as you approach the end of your draft, Castillo for speed, Burke and Hudson for a little of everything, and Cantu and Wigginton for power. Looking a little deeper there are standbys like Craig Biggio, Placido Polanco, Jose Castillo, and Adam Kennedy who can provide solid production in very deep leagues.
In Summary:
Chase Utley stands out above all of the options really. He's worth a late 1st or early 2nd round selection.
Brian Roberts and Chone Figgins represent consistent, speedy, good options at 2B, but not worth drafting until about the 4th round at the earliest.
After those 3 there are numerous young potent options. Mixed in with some older standbys like Jeff Kent. One of these guys will probably man your 2B spot. Don't draft one too early since there are a lot of them to be had.
