Throughout the history of men's college basketball, the Southeastern Conference has captured nine NCAA Championships and four NIT titles putting the SEC as one of the nation's top basketball conferences. The SEC is enjoyed an outstanding season in 2005-06, advancing Florida and LSU to the NCAA Final Four with the Gators winning their first-ever NCAA title. South Carolina won its second straight Conference Championship and at least half of the SEC teams made it to the postseason for the 28th consecutive year.

Justin Tubbs (G, 6-2, 175 * 16.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg)

If not for Florida, this group would have the best frontcourt in the SEC--no easy task. Even with the Gators, the Crimson Tide frontline can match-up with anyone in the country. Jermareo Davidson is a match-up problem at the center spot. He is very athletic down low and is also an excellent shot-blocker and rebounder. Richard Hendrix is ready for a huge season as a sophomore. He is an outstanding rebounder but needs to work on his offensive game in order to fulfill his potential. Alonzo Gee is solid on the wing with his driving ability. Redshirt Yamene Coleman and freshman Demetrius Jemison are two more big bodies in the paint. Alabama has one of the most feared trios in the game. Ronald Steele, Richard Hendrix, and Jermareo Davidson may easily be the best threesome in this year’s game. Steele will easily be a shoe-in for a preseason All-America spot, along with the other two the tide will be rolling come March.

Projected Starting Five:
Jermareo Davidson, Senior, Center, 14.3 points per game
Richard Hendrix, Sophomore, Forward, 9.4 points per game
Brandon Hollinger, Sophomore, Guard, 2.3 points per game
Ronald Steele, Junior, Guard, 14.3 points per game
Alonzo Gee, Sophomore, Forward, 8.6 points per game

Gary Ervin (G, 5-11, 176, 7.4 ppg, 4.7 apg)
Michael Washington (F, 6-10, 229, 28.0 ppg, 14.0 rpg, 9.0 bpg)
Sonny Weems (G/F, 6-6, 201, 15.7 ppg)
Stefan Welsh (G, 6-2, 180, 17.0 ppg, 5.0 apg)

After continually underachieving, Coach Stan Heath and his Arkansas squad finally made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. Despite the mass exodus from the backcourt, the Razorbacks have the talent to make a return trip. They will have to depend on newcomers to partake in most of the minutes on the perimeter and that is always a scary proposition. Sophomore Sean McCurdy has the most returning experience of anyone in the Arkansas backcourt, despite averaging just 7.7 minutes per game as a freshman. He's a solid floor leader with a nice shot from long range, but the newcomers may prevent McCurdy from being anything other than a roleplayer. Ervin, Beverley and Weems won't be able to ease into the lineup. They will all be asked to contribute immediately. That's not a problem for Ervin, but the level of competition will be greatly increased for Beverley and Weems. If it takes too long for them to come around, the Razorback perimeter will struggle. If they are playing like veterans by March, this will be an NCAA team the opposition won't want to see in their bracket.

Projected Starting Five:

Gary Ervin, Junior, Guard, DNP last season
Patrick Beverley, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Charles Thomas, Junior, Forward, 9.7 points per game
Darian Townes, Junior, Forward, 9.5 points per game
Steven Hill, Junior, Center, 3.0 points per game

Larry Williams, Jr. (G, 6-2, 160, 19.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 5.0 apg)

Jeff Lebo is continuing the turnaround at Auburn and things look better than they have in some time. Various transfers have hindered the team, but one transfer in particular (Quan Prowell) will make a huge impact and enough talent returns for the Tigers to dream about postseason play. The lack of size is a major concern, and will most likely keep Auburn at home in March for at least one more year. The frontcourt has some returning talent in sophomores Josh Dollard and Korvotney Barber. Dollard is a decent shooter, although he may try his luck from behind the arc a little too much. Barber has the potential to become a star in the SEC. The 6-7 forward led the team with 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks last season. Not having a true center is an issue, but a frontcourt of Barber and Prowell is an intimidating duo that will make their presence known. The depth should not be as much of a problem as it has been lately. The perimeter has Hayles and Miaway as very capable players and the frontcourt has a sophomore with starting experience in Dollard.

Projected Starting Five:

Quantez Robertson, Sophomore, Guard, 8.0 points per game
Rasheem Barrett, Sophomore, Guard, 11.1 points per game
Frank Tolbert, Junior, Guard, 9.1 points per game
Quan Prowell, Junior, Forward, DNP last season
Korvotney Barber, Sophomore, Forward, 6.8 points per game

The Gators had little trouble scoring in 2005-06, averaging over 78 points per game and shooting a UF record 50.0 percent from the floor. It was when they learned to defend the perimeter and dominate the glass that they became a championship-caliber team. The Gators finished second in the SEC in scoring, however, very often lost in the shuffle is that they finished second in the league in fewest points per game allowed. Over the final 11 games of the season, all wins, the Gators held opponents to just 59.4 points and out-rebounded their opponents by nearly seven boards per game. Only one of the final 11 opponents reached 70 points. The Gators will enter the 2006-07 looking to play the same style of intense defense, locking down the perimeter while crushing opponents on the glass and swatting any shot that comes in the lane.

Projected Starting Five:
Corey Brewer, Junior, Forward, 12.7 points per game
Taurean Green, Junior, Guard, 13.3 points per game
Al Horford, Junior, Forward, 11.3 points per game
Lee Humphrey, Senior, Guard, 10.9 points per game
Joakim Noah, Junior, Foward, 14.2 points per game

For the first time at Georgia, Coach Dennis Felton has some options. In the backcourt the choices are plentiful and proven talents. On the front line, not so much. Dave Bliss and Steve Newman started much of last season in the paint. Neither was dominant, nor even that effective. Sophomores Terrance Woodbury, Kendrick Johnson and Rashaad Singleton are the other options in the paint. Woodbury, although undersized at 6-6 and more of a wing than a post presence, showed the most promise as a freshman. The 6-6 Virginia Beach, Virginia native earned five starts before being sidelined in February with a stress fracture to a vertebrae in his spine. If the frontcourt has a surprise or two in them, this is a group that can be surprisingly good. If not, it will be another year without a postseason trip.

Projected Starting Five:

Sundiata Gaines, Junior, Guard, 10.3 points per game
Levi Stukes, Senior, Guard, 11.6 points per game
Mike Mercer, Sophomore, Guard, 11.0 points per game
Steve Newman, Senior, Forward, 4.9 points per game

Kentucky barely slipped into the NCAA Tournament for their 15th consecutive appearance with a 9-7 record in the SEC. The Wildcats started to come together late in the year and Coach Tubby Smith hopes that momentum will continue into the 2006-2007 campaign. Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford will replace Rondo and Sparks in the backcourt. While Bradley can't compare with Rondo on the defensive end, he is a better shooter and is a hard worker who could become a team leader. After spending much of his first two seasons at the three, Crawford will slide over to where he belongs at the two. The 6-5 junior averaged 10.2 points per game and is a solid outside shooter. If the nagging injuries remain in the past, Crawford is due for a big season.

Randolph Morris returns and may end up to be the most important player on the team. After averaging 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in a shortened season due to his involvement with an agent, the 6-11 center is expected to shoulder even a bigger load in the scoring department and on the glass. His frontcourt mates will likely be Sheray Thomas at the four and Bobby Perry at the three. Jared Carter, a 7-2 sophomore will be in the mix as well. Carter saw very few minutes as a freshman, but the highly touted recruit will be ready to play a bigger role this year. If Coach Smith wants to play big, Morris could spend some minutes at the four with Carter at the five. This might not be as talented of a squad as Kentucky fans have become accustomed to, but it is not as bad as some make it out to be either. The Wildcats have top 25 talent, they just have to find some leadership in order to turn that talent into success.

Projected Starting Five:

Ramel Bradley, Junior, Guard, 7.9 points per game
Joe Crawford, Junior, Guard, 10.2 points per game
Bobby Perry, Senior , Forward, 7.1 points per game
Sheray Thomas, Senior, Forward, 4.3 points per game
Randolph Morris, Junior, Forward, 13.3 points per game

There is early anticipation for the 2006-07 LSU men's basketball season and for good reason. Coming off a season in which the Tigers won a second straight Southeastern Conference Western Division title, the regular season SEC Championship (the first since 2000 and the first outright title in 21 years) made their first trip to the NCAA Final Four in 20 years and finished with a final ranking of No. 3 in the country in the National Coaches' poll. Davis, the consensus choice as SEC Player of the Year, made tremendous improvement from his freshman to sophomore seasons as he led the league in scoring at 18.6 points a game and rebounding at 9.7 boards a contest. Davis was also fourth in the league in field goal percentage (49.5%) and first in the league in offensive rebounds at 4.03 a game. When the league games begin, LSU will put on the line a 17-game home SEC winning streak that dates back to the final game of the 2004 season and includes all eight conference games in the Maravich Center in both 2005 and 2006. The LSU basketball program re-established itself as one of the national players on the college basketball map and Tiger fans look forward to another season of success. 2006-2007 could be a special year for LSU.

Projected Starting Five:
Glen Davis, Junior, Forward, 18.6 points per game
Tack Minor, Junior, Guard, 10.8 points per game
Tasmin Mitchell, Sophomore, Forward, 11.4 points per game
Garrett Temple, Sophomore, Guard, 5.1 points per game
Darnell Lazare, Senior, Forward, 5.7 points per game

The Rod Barnes era at Mississippi is over and the Rebel faithful look forward to a change. Oxford isn't the easiest place to win, but Andy Kennedy will bring a welcome transformation. The winning ways won't start immediately, but the future is finally looking promising. While things might look grim with a projected 12th place overall finish in the SEC, the Rebels have the ingredients to be a surprise team. Clarence Sanders and Bam Doyne anchor a suddenly experienced backcourt, while sophomore forward Trey Hampton has the potential to become a big time player under Andy Kennedy. Jeremy Parnell returns to his spot beside Curtis up front. With Coach Kennedy bringing his new system into Oxford, the Rebels may pull off a surprise or two, but the better things will come in the following years.

Projected Starting Five:
Justin Cerasoli, Sophomore, Guard, DNP last season
Clarence Sanders, Senior, Guard, 9.1 points per game
Bam Doyne, Senior, Guard, 9.0 points per game
Jeremy Parnell, Junior, Forward, 4.8 points per game
Dwayne Curtis, Junior, Center, 13.6 points per game

It will take a while for Mississippi State to regain the form they had during their Lawrence Roberts glory days, but it's all on the up swing from here on out. Last year's freshmen had quality campaigns and this year's newcomers will add some more depth to an increasingly impressive roster. The Bulldogs are a little slim up front. Dietric Slater and Jamont Gordon are solid wing players, but Gordon may need to move up to the four if the Bulldogs want their best five on the floor. Charles Rhodes developed into a solid post player as a sophomore averaging 13.8 points and a team high 7.1 boards. MSU is a little young and will be beaten by teams with more talent up front, but the guards have the potential to pull off some big wins. In the end, the Bulldogs are still a year or two away from thinking about the NCAA Tournament.

Projected Starting Five:
Richard Delk, Sophomore, Guard, 3.5 points per game
Reginald Delk, Sophomore, Guard, 8.9 points per game
Dietric Slater, Senior, Guard, 10.1 points per game
Jamont Gordon, Sophomore, Forward, 13.8 points per game
Charles Rhodes, Junior, Forward, 13.8 points per game

South Carolina has a little rebuilding to do after losing three starters, however, Coach Dave Odom has some talent returning that will be ready to take over the scoring load. It's a mixed blessing when the practice squad backcourt looks more impressive than the group on the floor and there will be some times when Gamecock fans see Devan Downey and Zam Fredrick on the bench and wish the transfers didn't have to redshirt this season. Despite all the losses in the frontcourt, it doesn't look too bad with Brandon Wallace returning. Wallace started nearly every game last year, averaging 7.6 points and 6.3 rebounds. With the rest of the frontcourt minutes being taken over by newcomers or seldom used players like Ousmane Konate, Wallace will be the main scoring option under the basket. The starting five is adequate, but the incoming freshmen won't have much time to adjust before they will be asked to contribute. There may be some tough times early in the year, but the Gamecocks will be dangerous come March. Unfortunately, that danger will come once again in the NIT, and not the NCAAs.

Projected Starting Five:
Tre Kelley, Senior, Guard, 12.5 points per game
Bryce Sheldon, Senior, Guard, 4.1 points per game
Dwayne Day, Junior, Guard, 4.8 points per game
Dominique Archie, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season
Brandon Wallace, Senior, Forward, 7.6 points per game

Coach Bruce Pearl and his Tennessee squad were one of the more pleasant surprises last year winning the SEC East handily over teams like Florida and Kentucky. The frontcourt was a concern last year, but it will be a bigger issue this season. The frontcourt has close to nothing returning, although Bradshaw can be a very undersized four if Coach Pearl opts for a four guard lineup, which is a possibility. Ryan Childress isn't out of the equation after averaging just 5.9 minutes per game as a freshman. The frontcourt's inexperience will cause problems, but the talent level is better than it was a year ago. Still, we are talking about freshmen and expectations shouldn't be placed on Chism and Crews. If the big guys can hold their own, Tennessee is a top 25 team. There might be some issues early, which will keep the Volunteers on the outside looking in, but by March, Coach Pearl will have his group ready to for a run. If it weren't for Chris Lofton, this team wouldn't be near the top 25.

Projected Starting Five:
Ramar Smith, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Chris Lofton, Junior, Guard, 17.2 points per game
Dane Bradshaw, Senior , Guard, 7.1 points per game
Duke Crews, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season
Wayne Chism, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season

Vanderbilt has had their share of ups and downs over the last few years. This season it could go either way. An NIT trip would be expected and an NCAA berth would be great for a squad that lacks an interior game. Anything less than a postseason berth spells trouble for Coach Kevin Stallings. Due to the lack of frontcourt players, we may see a more up-tempo style in Nashville this year. That works perfectly well for point guard Alex 'Red' Gordon, wings Shan Foster and Derrick Byars and sixth man Dan Cage. Gordon proved last year that he can run the show effectively. The quick 6-2 Pensacola, Florida native will need to become a floor leader, but he has the talent to lead Vandy to an NCAA Tournament. The strength of this team is Foster and Byars on the wings. Both are dangerous long range threats and should once again be the top scorers on the team. Sharpshooter Cage will provide a spark off of the bench. If any success finds Vanderbilt during the 2006-2007 campaign, it will be on this underappreciated group's shoulders.

Projected Starting Five:
Alex Gordon, Junior, Guard, 5.7 points per game
Shan Foster, Junior, Guard, 15.9 points per game
Derrick Byars, Senior, Guard, 12.4 points per game
Ross Neltner, Junior, Forward, DNP last season
Alan Metcalfe, Junior, Forward, 2.2 points per game
